Essay
“The wall that divides the rich quarter, where the dead get buried in the earth, from the poor quarter, where the dead get stacked up.”
“What could put you in the trash and nobody would care, nobody would come looking.”(Pg.65) In the book Trash Andy Mulligan show us the division from the rich and poor in a lot of ways. For example the cemetery, clothing differents and the treatment of the poor all together.
In the book Trash Andy Mulligan shows the difference between the rich and poor at the cemetery by telling us that there is a wall that divides the rich and the poor parts of the cemetery. On the poor side of the cemetery the poor are stacked up in boxes but on the rich half they have coffins and they are dug underground. The poor can only rent a concrete hole not a proper grave. “We passed so many graves, saddest thing were the open ones.” The concrete holes come at a cost. It cost the poor 2,005 Pesos for five years. So if you wanted one. It was hard work for them to earn that much money and still pay for food. “There’s a part of the cemetery where old bones are thrown and left to rot amongst the trash. Somebody's child, or somebody’s grandma.”
The clothes is a big way to shows us the difference between the poor and rich. If the poor wanted a lift down town it is hard. As this quote clearly states “If you look like me it’s hard to get a ride.” Pg.117. Most the clothes that the poor people find is found in the trash.”Half the stuff we ware is what we find.” All they usually where is shorts, sometimes shorts and t-shirt. And the lucky kids are the only people who find or have a pair of shoes.
The treatment of the poor is pretty shocking to read about in trash, perfect example, raphael got taken by the police and beaten up. “He reached and grabbed me and he the man in the suit lifted me up by the hair.” The rich underestimated that the poor couldn't read, such as when the police were kidnapping raphael they were surprised that he could read. “This piece of shit can read,” “who thought trash like you could read.” Goin back to clothing part of it, it also connects with the way the poor are treated. Quote “When you look like me you can't even get a ride very often, not when you're alone you get kicked off like a curse.”
Andy Mulligan has showed the division incredibility well in Trash. I have shown some the way of showing the division, Cemetery (Showing that the poor and rich is divided by a wall), Clothing (Showing that the clothing is very different in both worlds), Treatment of the poor (Showing that even the police treat the poor poorly). To sum it up the poor aren't anywhere near as well treated as the rich in anyway possible.
